Why Thickness Matters in Garage Floor Coatings

One major difference between our full flake system and 1-day polyurea coatings is thickness. And when it comes to garage floor coatings, thickness is a big deal.

1-day installers rely entirely on polyurea-polyaspartic coatings, which cure rapidly. That speed might sound appealing, but there’s a catch—fast curing means less penetration into the concrete, leading to a weaker bond. These coatings are also much thinner, making them more vulnerable to chipping, cracking, and delamination when the concrete expands or contracts.

Our full flake garage floor coatings use a moisture-mitigating epoxy base coat. Epoxy takes longer to cure, but that’s actually an advantage—it soaks into the concrete for superior adhesion. Once the epoxy base coat is down, we embed a thick layer of decorative flakes directly into it, ensuring full coverage and long-term durability. The next day, we return to buff the surface smooth before applying two polyaspartic topcoats, which seal everything in place with a tough, glossy finish.

Concrete is porous, meaning it absorbs moisture from the ground below. This hydrostatic pressure is one of the biggest reasons coatings fail over time. As such, these floors can only be manually scraped (and not mechanically buffed) before application of the single clear top coat. (If they used a mechanical floor machine, the poorly embedded flakes would be pulled out of the thin base coat).

After curing, we buff the flakes smooth with a floor machine before sealing them with two (not only one) 100%-solids polyaspartic topcoats, giving you a seamless, thick, high-end finish.
